Born September 13, 1947 in Detroit, Ed was the son of Albert and Dorothy Rumptz. Prior to graduation from high school, Ed enlisted and faithfully served our country in the United States Marine Corps from October 14, 1964 until October 11, 1968. While in Vietnam, he received the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 stars, the Purple Heart Medal, National Service Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Good Conduct Medal. On April 20, 1968, Ed married the love of his life, Connie Chacksfield, in Royal Oak. After his military service, he worked as an engineer for GE, then served as a Police Officer in Sterling Heights for 15 years. He then went on to pursue his degree in Aviation and lead an accomplished life as a Helicopter Pilot working for Channel 2 News Sky 2, starting the Medivac Program at the University of Michigan Hospital, flying corporately for Gannett out of Washington D.C., then flying at St. Vincent Hospital and finally Henry Ford Health System before retiring in August of 2012. Ed was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and the Monroe County Rod and Gun Club where he participated as a Competitive Marksman winning several matches in his lifetime.
Ed leaves to cherish his memory, Connie, his wife of the past 50 years; his daughter Cara Gabryszewski of Chicago, Illinois; a brother James (Christine) Rumptz of Clearwater, Florida and nephew Scott Rumptz. Sadly, he is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Linda.

Dear Family of "Ed Sky2Ski" Gabryszewski, I had the pleasure of becoming friends with your husband and father during the years that we both spent working at WJBK-TV2 (1978-1984, for me). I always knew he was an highly-skilled pilot and felt very safe with him. But more than that, he was a fantastic person. We talked a lot because we often flew to Lansing or Ann Arbor for me to cover games or team practices. So we had time for great conversations about all kinds of topics. He was wise; kind; smart and exactly the person you would want on your side in any kind of trouble. I'm so sorry for your loss, but I feel privileged to have known him. Anne Doyle

Worked with Ed at the University of Michigan Survival Flight program. Never met a more friendly, open and honest man. Hell of a pilot and a man who exemplified integrity. A great example of someone who did the right thing for all of us...all the time.
